The course summarizes the available evidence regarding the burden of disease associated with HPV infection in both women and men, the efficacy of HPV vaccines in different populations and at-risk groups, as well as the impact and effectiveness of routine HPV vaccination programs. It also reviews the evidence on the safety of these vaccines and addresses various aspects of vaccine hesitancy that will enable professionals to acquire knowledge and skills to address it in their routine practice. The objective of the course is to improve knowledge and one-to-one communication on HPV vaccination of healthcare providers working with young people and their parents/carers and those delivering public health messaging. The course scientific director is Dr. Maria Brotons, a Medical Specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health from the Cancer Epidemiology Research Programme, at the Catalan Institute of Oncology, Barcelona, Spain. This course has been developed within the PROTECT-EUROPE project, co-funded by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) under the European Union’s EU4Health (EU4H) programme 2021-2027 (Grant agreement No. 101080046). The E-learning material has been prepared in March 2024 and it is based on pre-existing training material from the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Spanish that has been translated into English, reviewed by project partners and updated. The E-learning material includes the main findings from PROTECT-EUROPE project tasks aimed to identify good practice in one-to-one communication on HPV vaccination between clinicians and young people and their parents/carers. Objetivos

At the end of this course, participants will be able to understand:

The epidemiology of HPV infections and the lesions and cancers they cause.
The natural history and carcinogenesis process of HPV in cervical cancer.
The preventive strategies against cervical cancer and the existing initiatives for its elimination
The HPV vaccines currently available.
The impact and effectiveness of HPV vaccination programs on cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases
The available data on alternative dosing schedules of HPV vaccine
The effectiveness of HPV vaccines in special populations
The safety of HPV vaccines.
The key aspects of HPV vaccine hesitancy and how to address it.
How to improve individual communication with parents/ carers about HPV vaccination.

Destinatarios

All healthcare professionals involved in vaccination and HPV diseases: Paediatricians, adolescent medicine specialists, general practitioners, nurses, midwives, public health specialists, pharmacists, dentists, or other health professionals with a role in discussing HPV vaccination directly with young people and their parents/carers. The online training of 20 hours is divided into 7 modules, each one with a duration of approximately 3h, developed by professionals and experts in the field. The course has a duration of 9 weeks, with each module being unlocked on a weekly basis.

Metodología

The course is supported by an expert tutor to address doubts and inquiries. The achievement of the educational objectives in terms of knowledge is assessed through:

Review all the contents of the 7 modules.
3 Evaluation questionnaires. Two attempts are permitted to reach a minimum of 70% correct multiple-choice questions to pass each of the 3 exams. Final grade will be obtained by the average of the 3 questionnaires and must be a minimum of 7 out of 10. Additionally, to assess participants’ gain in self-perceived communication skills a questionnaire will be provided at the beginning and the end of the course (pre/post test). This information will not be used to assess the completion of the course in order to obtain the certificate, but it will provide valuable information on the achievement of educational objectives.
